Progress of Schoolchildren May Be Impelled by Business Too
2009-04-30
Project “Most Advanced Class”, which promotes the progress of learning, is gaining momentum. The project has already engaged one hundred classes from more than half of Kaunas comprehensive schools to take part in the competition, held for the first time in Lithuania.
“Private business is turning back to education. This is how the generation, whose intellect will contribute not only to successful development of business but also to the overall progress of society, is grown up”, stated Toma Lileikienė, Deputy Head of the Division for Education and Training of Kaunas City Municipality.
The participating classes have already presented to organisers with the average marks of the last but the one trimester or semester. They fluctuate from 5.52 to 9.18. Progress index is calculated by comparing the differences of averages of the last trimesters or semesters. The second average will be submitted after the termination of the academic year.
“Highest winning chances appear to be for the schoolchildren with lowest marks, because they have more space for pulling up and, thus, raising the progress index. Nevertheless, even those who demonstrate feeble progress would be able to be proud of themselves because only by making progress we move ahead and achieve best results”, said Antanas Pranculis, Director General of the project initiator Kaunas Heat and Power Plant (KHPP).
One of the objectives of the project “Most Advanced Class” is to revive the team spirit. Currently emphasised individual learning brought negative effect on class atmosphere. During this project the students are interested in achieving better results not just for themselves, but also in helping their classmates to do that.
Project “Most Advanced Class” is meant for the 5th to 11th graders from the comprehensive schools of Kaunas. The winner of the competition will be the class that would demonstrate the highest improvement of its study results over the current trimester/semester as compared to the previous one. The winning class will be awarded the progress-symbolizing prize, namely a trip to the Swedish capital and the visit to the Nobel Museum.
