According to the design for the development of Kaunas Heat and Power Plant (KHPP), one of the most modern thermal power stations in the eastern and central Europe is planned to be constructed in Kaunas.
It would be a combined cycle power plant, using natural gas for the production of both electricity and heat. Power plant would produce heat to the consumers of Kaunas city, whereas electricity would be supplied to the common network of Lithuania.
The new power plant would come to be one of the sureties for energy security after the shutdown of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant next year.
combined cycle power plant establishes possibilities for the utilization of raw materials to a more efficient degree, which demonstrates that much more heat and electricity is produced with the same amount of gas used. The given situation leads to predictions that the construction of a new power plant would pay for itself much more quickly and the heating bills for the inhabitants would refrain from rapid growth, whereas such increase would be conspicuous while running the old power plant.
