Public Progress May Be Impelled by Business Too
2009-06-22
“Social responsibility”, “care of community interests”, “priorities of social policy” and “active member of the society” are the phrases to be easily found in a number of official presentations of companies. However, the number of companies with a targeted and coherent policy of social responsibility and shaped traditions of support is few in our country. One of such companies is Kaunas Heat and Power Plant (KHPP), generating heat to Kaunas, for which social responsibility has become one of the constituent parts of its business strategies long before.
Idea of Progress to Schools
In parallel with the creation of successful long-term business KHPP is developing the social responsibility of the company too, based on the mission and values of the company. “We perceive that economic development of society is inconceivable without the cultural and intellectual progress of it; therefore, since long before we have been actively taking part in sponsorship of social, cultural and educational projects”, stated Rimandas Stonys, the member of the Board of KHPP.
One of the recent KHPP’s initiatives of social responsibility, which has already achieved enthusiastic response within Kaunas community, is the competition “Most Advanced Class”, promoting the schoolchildren to achieve better study results. The company carries out this project together with KAUNO ELEKTRINĖ, which pursues the plans to construct one of the most modern thermal power plants in Eastern Europe.
“Our activity is based on the most advanced and modern ideas and constant search of innovative solutions. We have decided to promote the idea of progress also in the schools of Kaunas; therefore, we announced a competition to encourage the schoolchildren pursuing higher study results”, stated Mr Stonys, Member of the Board of KHPP and the Director General of KAUNO ELEKTRINĖ.
Project “Most Advanced Class” is meant for the 5th to 11th graders from the comprehensive schools of Kaunas. The winner of the competition will be the class that would demonstrate the highest improvement of its study results over the current trimester/semester as compared to the previous one. The winning class will be awarded the progress-symbolizing prize, namely a trip to the Swedish capital and the visit to the Nobel Museum.
Competition “Most Advanced Class” gives you a stimulus to outbrave yourself, as well as improve and pursue higher results. “Generation of heat and electric power is the team work. We are convinced that team work would lead to the achievement of highest results and greatest victories. This social project also proves this “, stated Mr Stonys.
City Authorities Support the Initiative
Project “Most Advanced Class” attracted the city government and Kaunas Municipality has become the patron of this initiative. “Gladly, we would like to express our kind thankfulness to Kaunas Heat and Power Plant for this project. We have no doubts that the competition “Most Advanced Class” will encourage the schoolchildren for more successful learning process, raise their willingness to improve and achieve better results”, asserted Toma Lileikienė, Deputy Head of the Division of Education and Training of Kaunas City Municipality.
It is really true that lately, where great emphasis is drawn on the importance of good study results, competition between the schoolchildren is likely to grow that leads to the destruction of good atmosphere in the class. “Thus, we are pleased that the major aim of this project is to work jointly; not to put efforts in individual work but also help the classmates. I am sure that the competition will contribute to the creation of better class atmosphere and help to feel the benefit of cooperation”, continued the idea Mrs Lileikienė.
Future Belongs to the Schoolchildren of Here and Now
Today, the project being at a halfway point, it is evident that this competition is a brilliant motivation means in pursuance of better study results among the schoolchildren. Trip to Sweden encourages everyone not only to strive for better personal results, but to work jointly, struggle both for yourself and for the friends.
All the interviewed schoolchildren from Kaunas secondary schools collectively stated that study efforts of the participating classes and assistance to others were obvious: schoolchildren were making homework more thoroughly and making their best efforts for every grade.
“Organised for the first time in Lithuania, competition of such character is the best example proving that business companies of the city, namely Kaunas Heat and Power Plant and KAUNO ELEKTRINĖ, and the schools of Kaunas are united by a common viewpoint. When the business perceives that the future belongs to the schoolchildren of here and now and turns back to the school, only then we are likely to expect better results. We are glad and grateful for such initiative that gives the schoolchildren a stimulus to outbrave themselves, as well as grants a possibility to win a wonderful prize, i.e. a trip to the Nobel Museum”, gladly said Dalia Lapėnienė, the headmistress of Kaunas Petras Vileišis Secondary School.
Purposeful Support to Culture
Competition “Most Advanced Class” is only a minor part of social projects carried out by KHPP. It has been for longer than one year that the company has been supporting the Sponsorship Club of the National Symphony Orchestra. Owing to KHPP, Lithuanians were given a unique chance to listen to one of the most famous Russian Symphony Orchestras, namely Moscow Evgeny Svetlanov Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and the legendary pianist Denis Matsuyev.
In addition, the company is one of the sponsors of M. K. Čiurlionis Culture and Heritage Fund. KHPP is in active collaboration in supporting the international project of sacral music and charity, titled “Pax et Bonum”, which advocates professional art.
Care of Community by Repeated Initiatives
KHPP’s active support is demonstrated to the sportsmen of the city, namely Kaunas Handball Club GRANITAS, Kaunas Basketball Club ŽALGIRIEČIAI VETERANAI, Kaunas Women Basketball Club LAISVĖ and Kaunas Sports Club for the Blind and Partially Sighted PAROLIMPIETIS.
“The society must see that sportsmen, participating in Paralympic Games, overcome distances being incapable of controlling their legs or in the absence of a hand. We express our immense gratitude to KHPP and other business companies allotting their support to us”, shared his thoughts the former famous basketball player Anatolijus Čupkovas.
According to Mr Stonys, adherence to the principles of social policy is of great relevance both to the public and the business itself. We consider social responsibility as a part of common business strategy instead of a mere component of the programme of public relations.
