Preventive Works Worth a Million
2009-07-24
After scheduled repair works, which lasted for three weeks, Kaunas Heat and Power Plant is to resume its operation. Inspection of facilities will cost about 1 million litas.
An Especially Expensive Inspection
Antanas Pranculis, the Director General of Kaunas Heat and Power Plant (KHPP), said that three-week-lasting scheduled repair works of the power plant were successful but expensive. It is estimated that all the minor works will cost around 1 million litas to the company. Such funds were scheduled in the company budget already last year.
“Such works are expensive; every year we need to find approximately this amount of money for the planned repair works”, stated Mr Pranculis by adding that last year analogous repair works cost approximately 1.7 million litas.
During three weeks inspection was made of the units, where, under ordinary procedure, no operation is possible unless the power plant is stopped. Before repair works specialists of KHPP adjusted the scheduled works with the company “Kauno energija” because the scheduled repair works covered hydraulic tests; moreover, the lines, which connect the power plant with the urban pipeline, were inspected.
At the present moment “Kauno energija” is also completing the planned repair works. A greater part of preparation for the heating season has already been completed by the company before the due deadline for repair works.
Serious Failures Not Found
Head of KHPP, managed by GAZPROM, assured that during the preventive inspection more serious failures were not found at the power plant, which is in operation for 41 years.
Basically, these were various minor works, - said Mr Pranculis about repair works. – Preventive inspection raises reliability, so we can stay calm that during the heating season everything will operate in a normal way.”
Experts inspected the water feed system from Kaunas sea, cooling system inside the facilities, district heating water system, water heating devices, which are connected directly to the pipeline.
All the pipelines are of large diameter, making up a metre or more. Every pipeline needed to be examined carefully to make sure there were no faults. We have noticed minor defects, but all of there have already been eliminated”, told Mr Pranculis.
Water is Heated in Petrašiūnai
When KHPP was stopped for scheduled repair works, heat to the city was started to be generated by the sources of integrated network for heat production in Kaunas city, which belong to “Kauno energija”, namely Petrašiūnai Power Plant, “Pergalė” and “Šilkas” boiler rooms. After the change in the heat production sources, the quality and price of heat remained unchanged.
At “Šilkas” and “Pergalė” boiler rooms district heating water is generated in water boilers by using natural gas. At Petrašiūnai Power Plant it is possible to use a steam boiler and thus generate electric energy and prepare for the distribution of water to the systems of Kaunas city. Heat production uses only around 15 % of the capacity of heat generation equipment running in the given sources.
Rimantas Šilkinis, Director of Production Department of the company “Kauno energija”, said that after the repair works of the steam turbine at Petrašiūnai Power Plant that year, it will take an advantage of the scheduled repair works at KHPP in order to test the fixed turbine and evaluate the possibilities of its usage for the production of electric power at Petrašiūnai Power Plant. Steam turbine at Petrašiūnai Power Plant is capable to generate up to 4 MW of electric power.
Counterbalance to the Major Power Plant
During the heating season the major part of heat, distributed to Kaunas residents, is purchased by “Kauno energija” from KHPP. During the non-heating season demand of heat in Kaunas city makes up around 52 megawatts (MW), from which at the present moment 64 % is supplied by Petrašiūnai Power Plant, around 8 % by “Pergalė” boiler room, which provides district heating water to the city centre, and, finally, about 28 % by “Šilkas” boiler room, which provides hot water to Vilijampolė and Šilainiai residential areas.
KHPP together with Petrašiūnai Power Plant, “Pergalė” and “Šilkas” boiler rooms, which belong to “Kauno energija”, are connected into an integrated network of district heating distribution system.
Director of “Kauno energija” Rimantas Bakas has assured that currently the company is in the possession of sufficient reserve sources of heat production. In case in winter KHPP would not be able to produce heat for any reasons, heating would not cause any troubles in the city.
We have a reserve in the capacity of 30 %. Such a reserve is sufficient, of course, provided that we had enough fuel”, said Mr Bakas. Presently, “Kauno energija” is checking the reserve sources of heat production. This in particular refers to Petrašiūnai Power Plant: equipment may operate at a bigger load, which would be impossible if KHPP is in operation.
KHPP is to renew its operation on Monday. The other repair works are scheduled in the next July.
Facts and Figures
- In Kaunas city supply of district heating covers 70 % of territory. The total length of the district heating distribution pipeline makes up around 400 km.
- During the heating season Kaunas Heat and Power Plant generates the major part of heat distributed to Kaunas residents.
- “Kauno energija” is the largest heat supply and distribution company in Kaunas region, which occupies a share of around 20 % of the Lithuanian heat supply market.
- In Kaunas city and district, as well as in Jurbarkas, “Kauno energija” guarantees its service to over 2.3 thousand companies and more than 115 thousand inhabitants.
- The major part of heat supplied by “Kauno energija” is consumed by multiple-dwelling buildings.
