2009-03-26

On Wednesday Kaunas City Council Board was presented information on the plans, cherished by businessmen, to build in Kaunas a new power plant in the capacity of 350 megawatts. The total investment amounts to one billion litas.

As one of the investors Rimandas Stonys, the Director General of KAUNO ELEKTRINĖ, informed the Municipality, this power plant is needed in dealing with the most complicated tasks, how to provide the residents of Kaunas with heat as best and at lowest costs possible. In the meantime the new power plant will supply electric power to the whole Lithuania and will guarantee reliable supply of it.

Kaunas Thermal Power Plant has served for 34 years already. Its equipment has served out since long ago. It is deemed that it is not worthwhile investing into this object anymore, as a result of what it is planned to construct a new power plant.

This August a call for tender for the construction of a power plant is planned to be announced.

Fifty one percent of the object will be based on the funds of Kaunas Thermal Power Plant, subsidiary of the Russian gas concern GAZPROM, and 49 % of shares will be divided among the possible Lithuanian European Union investors.

The permit for the construction of the power plant has been already received from the Ministry of Economy. According to the project supervisor Arvydas Ladyga, environmental impact assessment and cable connection selection study were conducted.
