Green Light for the New Power Plant in Kaunas
2008-12-31
Board of Kaunas Heat and Power Plant (KHPP) reached the decision to invest into the construction of the new combined cycle power block. Capacity of the new power plant would reach from 320 to 360 megawatts.
Investment of One Billion Litas
The new thermal power plant would be one of the most modern one in eastern and central Europe. It is planned that it would come into operation before the beginning of the heating season of 2012-2013. The project will be carried out by Kaunas Power Plant. According to Antanas Pranculis, the Director General of Kaunas Heat and Power Plant, plans to inject investment of one billion litas into the construction of a new power plant remain unchanged. Contractor will be obliged to accomplish turnkey works. Once built, it would ensure reliable electric power supply to the Lithuanian consumers and heat to Kaunas residents.
Promises of Smaller Bills
Following the agreement with Kaunas City Municipality, already in 2006 it was planned to expand the capacity of KHPP up to 70 megawatts for 140 million LTL. However, taking into account the closedown of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and higher need for electric power, the owners and managers of KHPP came to a decision to increase the capacity of the plant.
As compared to the current power plant, the new modern power station, which meets up-to-date requirements, would require significantly less natural gas for the production of heat. The given would be also directly felt among the inhabitants of Kaunas city, as they would receive smaller heating bills.
Clean Environment for Future Generations
“The new power plant is planned to be equipped with energy production technology in compliance with the strict EU environmental requirements. Air emission controls are to be performed by an automated continuous monitoring system. Our work is based on the principle: Clean Environment for Future Generations”, affirmed Mr Pranculis.
Referring to long experience and knowledge of its employees, KHPP seeks for the reduction of conventional air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, preservation of quality of natural water bodies, conservation of natural resources, rational use of auxiliary materials and increase in efficiency of production procedures.
According to the Director for Development Jurijus Junevičius, once the more efficient heat and energy production technology is equipped, quantity of pollutants would show substantial decline even though fuel consumption will increase with the expansion of capacities of the power plant.
Updated Website of KHPP
In preparing for the construction of the new power plant, KHPP has updated its website
www.kte.lt.
Website is introduced with virtual meters showing how much heat and energy has been produced by KHPP on the real-time basis starting from the beginning of the year. These data is updated every second.
