Difficult Times Narrow the Team of Devoted Patrons

The outcomes of the impact of the economic crisis in Lithuania and worldwide have been experienced at close quarters by sportsmen too. Despite the victories they achieved, business companies are less likely to give support even to those sportsmen that bring home international awards.
Victories as a Reward
Number of loyal sponsors, who would contribute money to cultural events, is likely to go down. “Businessmen give support as much as the circumstances allow that. Just as earlier we play in good faith not pursuing any remuneration, but rather doing that from heart and hand. Sports results are likely to improve because we brought home 9 medals from veteran competitions just last year. The support received was used for such competitions in order to exercise the possibility to go and participate in them”, stated Anatolijus Cupkovas, President of Kaunas Basketball Club ŽALGIRIEČIAI VETERANAI.
The veterans of the Lithuanian basketball have been participating for already 19 years in various world and European championships and are constant winners there. Being one of the sponsors of the Club, Kaunas Heat and Power Plant (KHPP) ensures its support to the famous Kaunas Handball Club GRANITAS, Lithuanian Physical Education and Sports Federation and “Tenisita”.
Failure to Receive Something from Government
According to Andrius Kuliešius, Head Coach of Kaunas Women Basketball Club LAISVĖ, there used to be more sponsors in earlier times. The present situation is particularly hard as the majority of business people shelter themselves under beneath the crisis. Gladly, some businessmen come out with their resolute efforts to support sports.
The Club LAISVĖ is a three-time champion of the Lithuanian League and two-times champion of the Baltic League. Three players became the champions of Europe together with the Lithuanian National Team. KHPP support was to ensure that the sportswomen had the possibility to take part in the championships of the Lithuanian and Baltic Leagues. “We feel the lack of support from the local government. We regularly ask for mediation in receiving support, but the process is likely to last too long. Officers may give comfort only. Other teams are buying legionnaires and we manage with the Lithuanians only, but our results are on a good level. We ask God for one thing only – to give us health”, stated Mr Kuliešius, Coach of LAISVĖ.
The Disabled are Expecting Support
In summer 2008 the Lithuanian National Basketball Team of the Disabled represented Lithuania in Switzerland in the European Championship Division B. Sportsmen from Kaunas Sports Club for the Blind and Partially Sighted PAROLIMPIETIS, namely the shot-putter and discus thrower Rolandas Urbonas, pentathlonist Tomas Kairys and marathon runner Kęstutis Bartkėnas took part in Paralympic Games, held in Beijing in 2008.
As Manager of the Lithuanian Sports Federation for Persons with Disabilities Mr Cupkovas states, the State should regulate sponsorship so that people and companies would be able and willing to render support.
“The society must see that sportsmen, participating in Paralympic Games, overcome distances being incapable of controlling their legs or in the absence of a hand. Maybe this would make them change their attitude. We express our gratitude to KHPP and other business companies allotting their support to us”, said the former famous basketball player.
Culture Will Not Exist Without Sponsors
The capital cannot stay without the financial support of Kaunas energy companies too. In October last year an exceptional concert was held at Vilnius Congress Hall. Once KHPP gave support, one of the most famous Russian Symphony Orchestras, namely Moscow Evgeny Svetlanov Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and the legendary pianist Denis Matsuyev, came to Lithuania.
According to Eugenijus Janutėnas, Director of the Sponsorship Club of the National Symphony Orchestra, culture would fail to exist in the absence of solid sponsors. Money, given by the State for concert activities, is not sufficient. In order to invite a famous performer or group, it is necessary to search for support.
It has been for three years that M. K. Čiurlionis Culture and Heritage Fund has been arranging the cycle of educational and art event “Active Civil Support for Preservation of National Heritage”. Since the foundation of the Fund, there have been over a hundred and a half of non-commercial, educational and art events held in Lithuania and abroad. The support was meant for the performance “Sonata of Nostalgia”, which took place in the Raudonė Castle.
“People make their choice which organisation they prefer to support. Every time you feel you owe them. Businessmen provide support stimulated by an impetus of their inner intelligence. Due to economic state, a great number of supporters cannot help us”, explained Stasė Starienė, Member of the Board of the Fund.
International project of sacral music charity, titled “Pax et Bonum”, advocate diverse Christian and Jewish traditional music, by bringing high-quality professional art closer to the human being, which, due to different circumstances, cannot find its way to elite halls. Last year a second festival was held, which was sponsored by KHPP also, however, it remains vague whether the third festival will be held the next year.
“Pax et Boum” covers all non-commercial events; therefore, they lack much promotional material. In addition, concerts are broadcasted by non-commercial television channels. Such concerts are necessary for simple people and those being in social exclusion. There are always some businessmen that are aware of that. We project the third festival to be held in 2010, but it may be hardly predicted due to the current economic state”, explained the Franciscan Arūnas Peškaitis.
Motivation of Schoolchildren
“By supporting the organisers of city festivals and cultural events or sportsmen we would like to demonstrate that KHPP is loyal to Kaunas City and its residents. It is significant for us to feel part of Kaunas City community”, said Antanas Pranculis, Head of KHPP.
Observing the most advanced and modern ideas and being in constant search for innovative solutions, this year the Heat and Power Plant will transfer their idea of progress to Kaunas schools by encouraging better studying results among the schoolchildren. The winner of the social project, i.e. the most advanced class, will be awarded a valuable prize.
Ready to allot investment in the amount of one billion litas, KHPP will not renounce its plans to further sponsor the clubs of diverse kinds of sport, cultural events, educational and medical institutions.
