In 1968 it was decided to build the Kaunas Heat and Power Plant. Along with rapid expansion of Kaunas industry and residential neighborhoods, the demand for a power plant of such capacity became urgent. At that time heat energy produced by the then operated PetrašiĆ«nai Power Plant was no longer sufficient to satisfy the needs of the growing city.
In 1971 construction of the Kaunas Heat and Power Plant started.
In 1972 the boiler-house, trestle bridges for pipelines and gas main were already built and the State Commission gave permission to operate the first water boiler and heat produced in it soon reached the Kaunas inhabitants.
In 1973 construction of the main block of power plant and the chimney out of reinforced concrete, 150 m high, began. In the same year the second water boiler and oil system started operating.
In 1975 construction of the main block was completed, the first energetic block was mounted and electric power was produced.
In 1976 the second unit (capacity of 100 megawatts) was connected to the electric-energetic system and the project-rated capacity of 160 megawatts was reached.
In 1984 the third steam-boiler started operating.
In 1988 the second chimney of power plant, 180 m high, was finished. At that time the Kaunas Heat and Power Plant produced most electric power (892 thousand megawatt-hours) during its existence.
In 1994 the Kaunas Heat and Power Plant underwent technological changes. There was introduced the computerized information management system enabling to monitor technical parameters and to carry out various analyses of work modes of the power plant.
In 1995 the public enterprise LITHUANIAN STATE ENERGETICS SYSTEM was reorganized into the stock company of special purpose (SCSP) LIETUVOS ENERGIJA, and its branch Kaunas Heat and Power Plant was renamed into the branch KAUNAS POWER PLANT.
In 1997 after reorganization of SCSP LIETUVOS ENERGIJA and conveying of the heat system and its management to the municipalities, the Kaunas Power Plant became a branch of SCSP KAUNO ENERGIJA.
In 2003 the private company UAB Kaunas Heat and Power Plant became the owner of the Kaunas Power Plant.
